Why has rock climbing become so popular?

First of all, it's fun as well as challenging. Rock climbing is also a great alternative workout and an excellent way to relieve stress. The best part about it is that anyone can climb.

At the Texas Rock Gym, we have climbs that are a little harder than climbing a ladder, climbs that are a little easier than climbing plate glass upside-down, and just about everything in between!

With all of the publicity rock climbing has been getting lately, (the X-Games, American Gladiators, etc.) it's no wonder why everyone wants to try it. Climbing gyms are popping up all over the nation, making this once "dare-devil" sport safe and accessible to nearly everybody. Hot young climbers are showing up all around the world, climbing the hardest routes imagineable, all because of the climbing gym.

So what is all the fuss about anyway? Why don't you come on in and see for yourself? Don't forget to bring a friend!

Climbing lessons

The Texas Rock Gym also offers climbing lessons. Below are a list and descriptions of the classes we are currently offering. In order to take a climbing class, call the gym nearest you for prices and availability.

Learning the Ropes: The ideal class for the fledgling climber looking to build technique in order to climb more efficiently. The basic aspects of climbing are covered, such as hand and foot positions, balance, and even vocabulary. No experience is necessary! Basic gym safety guidelines and instructions are gone over as well.

Thin Face Climbing: Learn how to move over low angle and vertical climbs with grace and finesse. This class covers body positions and balance techniques needed to ascend climbs with even the tiniest of holds. Foot work, as well as techniques such as rock-overs, mantles, ect. will be intensely covered.

Overhanging Technique: This class focuses on the unique body positions and footwork required to climb the more overhanging routes in the gym. Participants will learn useful moves such as drop-knees, back-steps, stems, and flags. Ever feel the pain of an intense forearm pump? Well fear no more, because resting on the climb will be covered as well.

Introduction to Bouldering: This is the perfect class for the beginner to the intermediate climber looking to improve his/her climbing through bouldering. This class goes through all of the basics of bouldering, such as spotting, topping out, and circuits. This class is the fastest, no strings attached (pardon the pun), way to extreme climbing.

Introduction to Lead Climbing: This class introduces the climber to the sharp end of climbing. Theory and technique for safe leading in the gym is covered. It is strongly recommended that the student be comfortable with climbing over-hanging rock.
